Die vereinigte Republik Tansania liegt am Indischen Ozean im östlichen Afrika. Tansanias Nachbarstaaten sind Kenia, Uganda, Burundi, Ruanda, DR Kongo, Sambia, Malawi und Mosambik. Der Name Tansania ist ein Kunstname, der bei der Staatsgründung 1964 aus den Bestandteilen Tanganjika, Sansibar und Azania, Bezeichnungen für verschiedene Landesteile Tansanias, geformt wurde. Das 945000 km² große Land hat ca. 41 Mio. Einwohner, die über 100 verschieden Sprachen sprechen, Amtssprache ist de facto Swahili. Tansanias Hauptstadt ist Dodoma, doch die Regierung sitzt in Daressalam. Die ersten freien Wahlen nach einer Zeit der Einparteienherrschaft fanden im Jahr 1995 statt und Tansania ist auf dem Weg in eine pluralistische Mehrparteiendemokratie. Die Währung ist der Tansania-Schilling.
50% der tansanischen Bevölkerung leben unter der Armutsgrenze. Im Jahr 2007/2008 war Tansania auf Platz 159 von 177 auf der HDI-Weltrangliste (HDI = Human Development Index, ein Index, der menschliche Entwicklung eines Staates angibt). Obwohl eines der ärmsten Länder der Welt, ist in Tansania eine positive Entwicklung zu beobachten: Eine konsequente Reformpolitik zeigt sich als recht erfolgreich, sodass in den letzten Jahren ein konstantes Wirtschaftswachstum verzeichnet werden konnte. Auch zählt Tansania zu den politisch stabilsten Ländern im Afrika südlich der Sahara.
